I have the worst time grilling hamburgers. One outing, all will be well. The next outing, I'm in danger of losing my eyebrows and all the skin on my hand. There's no rhyme or reason to it. I swear, I do everything the same.

I reserve the right to blame [livejournal.com profile] dr_funbags. She mentioned earlier this week that I was channeling her cooking skills and I think she might have jinxed me.

If I set myself on fire next time, you know who to question. I'm just saying.

Despite the fact that it had been snowing a good part of the afternoon and evening, I decided I was going to grill anyway. It wasn't like I'd be standing outside the whole time and I'd grilled in the cold before. What was a little snow?

Well, I was right. The snow was nothing.

The wind, however, was fierce. And snow can sting when it hits you in the face at high velocity. I'm just saying. Not to mention the havok it played with my flames every time I opened the lid. But, I managed to cook the steaks without much trouble considering how many times I've nearly set myself on fire with that grill.

And then I brought the steaks inside and went about finishing up the onions and mushrooms when the power went out. The first thing out of my mouth? "I'm cooking here, dammit!"

After a few more seconds of blackness and my confused brain trying to figure out what the hell I was going to do with dinner, the power came back on. Good thing because I was blanking on a back-up plan.

The power just went out again about twenty minutes ago. Carrie said that Spot was sleeping under the table upstairs in her room at the time. When the power went out, Spot woke up and looked at Carrie like it was her fault.

And if you ask Pete, the wind and snow are the bipeds' fault, too.

Well, we're sure as hell not doing anything to stop it.

Edit: The power just flickered again. I'm getting really tired of resetting my clock.

For all of my grilling adventures, I usually hang up my fireproof apron (so to speak, I don't really have one, though sometimes I think I could use one) around the end of September/beginning of October, when the cool weather and earlier sundowns come into play.

This year, though, I've kept grilling. I just put on a jacket (though at least one Novemeber night I didn't need it) and used a flashlight until Dad dug out and enabled a lantern for me to set next to the grill. I admit that it's mostly because I don't want to use the indoor grill. I'm putting it off because I hate cleaning that thing.

Anyway, tonight was a grilling first for me. I grilled in below freezing weather. That's right. It was officially 24 degrees out while I was cooking my steaks.

It wasn't really that bad. It's not like I was actually outside all that long and the steaks cooked just like they always did, no trouble at all.

I'm thinking so long as it doesn't snow, I might keep grilling throughout the winter.

I did watch Sanctuary, but I don't have a lot to say. )

Just a few comments on tonight's episode.

Castle..'Love a good perp walk.' )

In cooking news, I added another burn to my hand. I hit it on the very hot oven as I was putting a pizza into it. So now I have a blister and a red stripe. Along with the miscellaneous scratches (that I can't remember/don't know how I got), it looks like my left hand has been involved in some very serious business usually found in a high-violence action-adventure or possibly a low-key slasher movie.

Not the best look after Halloween. I'm just saying.

My little hick town ended up having their fireworks display last night. Carrie and I went and watched them from the Wal-Mart parking lot like we usually do. I cannot remember the last time I had to wear a jacket on 4th of July.

It rained almost all day, quitting a few hours before dusk, when the fireworks were scheduled. It was still cloudy though. It was a good show, but some of the higher fireworks got lost in the clouds. It was kinda neat. You'd see it go up and then the cloud would light up some color.

Carrie said that we now know what an alien invasion would look like. It did have that kind of eerie quality.

The parking lot wasn't as full as it has been in the past and some jackass took that as an invitation to set off some fireworks of his own. We're talking big ol', bad ass rockets that went off about twenty feet directly over our heads. Fireworks are pretty until they're raining down on you.

After the show, we went to Dairy Queen to try the new Tagalong blizzard (OMG SO GOOD!) and ate it in the parking lot, watching traffic thin out.

Like I said, hick town. Lots of my life has been spent hanging out in parking lots.

As far as I know, our postponed 4th of July poker party should be happening tonight. Unfortunately, I don't think I got the amount of sleep required for a night of cards and booze.

Caffiene, I'm on my way.

Made mushroom and swiss burgers for dinner tonight. I chopped up the mushroom and onions and put them in the hamburger as well as sauteed some for the top.

I loved them and they seemed to go over well with everyone else, too.

Provided we don't all die in the night from some food related illness, I think this recipe is a keeper.

And for the first time ever grilling burgers, I didn't have some big flame up that threatened my eyebrows.

I need to invest in an apron though. I am not a neat cook.

Had a little incident with the grill tonight.

This isn't the first time this year I've used it. I've used it several times without any problems.

Tonight, though, I flip the burgers and then go back into the house to tend to the fries and prepare the buns. I grab the cheese, turn to go outside with it, and think, "Wow. That's a lot of smoke."

Well, there was a lot of smoke because there was a lot of fire. I got the grill shut off, got my water bottle, and bravely fought the flames to save the burgers. Some were more charred than others, but all still edible.

And if I had any hair on my hand before, I don't now. I'm pretty sure that some of the burning flesh smell was me. Nothing serious. I'm still rare, if not a little pink.

If I remember right, this sort of thing happened last year, too. I think it's a summer tradition for me.

I couldn't have a pleasant one. It has to be a potentially fatal one.
whiski_sour: (what the shit is this?)
I decided to make hamburgers for dinner tonight. I usually make dinner between 6:30 and 7:30. About twenty after six, I hear thunder.

I assess the situation. It seems it's going north. Terrific. I'll just get my burgers grilled real quick and be done with it.

I light the grill, make the burger patties, get the cheese ready, and haul everything outside. As I'm slapping the patties on the grill, it starts to sprinkle. Well, hell.

I get the burgers on the grill, close the lid, and feed Pete and McGee cheese in the garage. It starts to rain lightly. I get a bag of dried cat food out of the back of the jeep (we'd run out today and that is just a no-no situation in this house), take it in, and come back out to flip the burgers.

It's still raining and I have no skill at flipping burgers on a grill apparently, but I get it done. I slap the cheese on, close the lid, and take refuge in the garage with the cats.

After a few minutes, I go back out into the rain to get the burgers off the grill. The flames are spiking. The burgers will not get on my spatula so I can put them onto the plate. It's raining on my food.

I at least had the sense to turn off the grill, but I still wrecked two burgers in my haste and the rest got wet. I can never get away with grilling hamburgers without wrecking at least one of them, rain or shine.

And to top it all off, I had nothing to serve with them because the corn on the cob I was planning on grilling had gone bad.

I'm taking this as a sign that I'm done grilling hamburgers for the year.

I cooked hamburgers on the grill for dinner tonight. The drippings in the bottom of the grill caught fire, the cheese got a little burnt, and I still have my eyebrows. A successful dinner for someone who shouldn't be anywhere near an open flame.

I finished editing my rewrite of "In the Dark". Though my To Do list seems neverending, it feels good to cross something off of it. Next up: "Dead Guy in an Elevator" edits and continuing progress on "Not Pretty".

I also finished In the Night Room by Peter Straub. I liked it better than Ghost Story for sure, but I'm still not sold on the guy. The actual story I liked quite a bit; it's his style I'm having trouble getting used to. Maybe I'll try him again sometime.

I put off all the chores I was going to do today because I thought it was going to be ungodly hot and rain. But, neither of these things came to fruition. And neither did me changing my mind about doing those chores. That's what tomorrow is for.
