Yesterday morning, my store manager walks up to my counter all smiles as I am grumbling and checking in the freight my department manager hadn't so I can put it away.
Greg: Hi. How are you this morning?
Me: Fine. What do you want?
Greg: Why do you say that? What makes you think I want something?
Me: You're talking to me and smiling.
Greg: I hardly ever get time to talk to you. I thought I should.
Me: That's nice. What do you want?
Turns out he and Dan would like for me to take the vacant sporting goods/pets department manager position. Despite my protests, he told me to think about it. Then he and Dan proceeded to spend yesterday trying to convince me to take it. He came in this morning to ask if I had made a decision and I told him not yet.
I'm planning on giving him my answer tomorrow and I'm pretty sure my answer is going to be no. I've been a department manager and I hated it. I've had sporting goods and pets before and I hated them. I don't care if everyone else says it's easier now and I don't care if management thinks I'd be good at it, it's not what I want to do. I thought I made that clear when I was asked to take over jewelry and shoes.
Besides, I heard some gossip today that makes me feel less guilty about saying no.
And I bought very cute shoes today, so that also eases my pain. I didn't really need them, but Merry Christmas to me anyway.
