I was laughing too hard to be terrified
Oct. 5th, 2008 09:44 pmI was watching TV when Carrie alerted me that a place in Decatur was being featured on America's Most Terrifying Places on the Travel Channel.
Turns out, it was the Lincoln Theater downtown. I've been there! I don't recall any terrifying or ghostly experiences, but it was a long time ago. And I was there for a Three Stooges Marathon. I was probably laughing too hard and I missed it. The theater was gorgeous, though.
I was probably about sixteen and my grandpa took me there for the marathon, something like six hours (two movies and several shorts). While sitting there with my Papa, waiting for the show to start in this theater the likes I've never seen (it was built in the early 1900's and had been recently restored), Papa starts telling me stories about his time as an usher at another Decatur theater called The Empress.
As an usher he saw many of the classics multiple times, but his all time favorite was House of Wax in 3-D. People would get their glasses and go in and the lights would dim and the film would start and my Papa would spend the next 90 minutes laughing at the people reacting to the 3-D. The best, he said, was at the beginning when there's a guy on the street using a paddle ball. The whole audience would be moving their heads back and forth, he'd cry laughing.
He also said it was a really good movie.
Yeah, the Lincoln Theater is haunted, but with an entirely different kind of ghost. At least for me.
