Carrie's new issues of Entertainment Weekly, featuring the new Spock and Kirk on the cover, and Damon both showed up today. This led to a long discussion about the new Star Trek movie. Carrie and I are much too knowledgable for not being trekkies/trekkers.

Now, Carrie and I haven't read the article, but Damon had read it online. Carrie and I were just going by the pictures.

Two things that stood out for me on the casting: I don't think Kirk went through a blond phase and THAT IS NOT CHEKOV. Chekov looked like a Russian Davy Jones; this guy does not look like that. Actually, the total lack of sixties male hair is a little off putting to me anyway.

On the flip side, though, I was very much "bitch, please" at the casting of Karl Urban as McCoy. But the pictures of him are enough to change my mind. Somebody did their homework. He had the stance, the look, and the hair down in those shots. If he can sell "Dammit, Jim!", it'll be golden.

To clarify, I have no desire to see this movie (neither does Carrie) and I really have no emotional investment in it. But it was probably better to recount the geek conversation of the day than the American Indian burial ritual discussion Dad, Carrie, and I had during dinner.

No, I'm not making that up.

Star Trek IV for the win!
