Yoga for dancing
Sep. 22nd, 2008 10:37 pmI have not done yoga for several weeks due to my shoulder. At this point, I'm convinced it will never heal sans intervention by a miracle, conjurin' man, or a doctor and I can't afford any of those. Most of the poses I did in my previous yoga routine puts weight on my shoulder and I just can't do it.
Last week, I started a new routine, a short one, conentrating on leg strength. I only did it a couple of days so I could ease myself into it because my knee is fine and I don't want to screw it up again.
Wow.
I thought my leg strength had improved from the belly dancing (lots of leg work in shimmies and hip pops and hip pistons and such). I was so wrong.
I mean, yes, my leg strength has improved, but not nearly as much as I thought it had.
Before my shoulder problem, I was doing yoga 3 or 4 times a week for 20-25 minutes. My new routine is barely 10 minutes long and it kills me.
So here's the next physical challenge...getting back to doing a 20-25 minute yoga routine 3 or 4 times a week. I've got awhile to go, I can tell you.
BTW...did I ever mention what made me decide to get more active and led me to trying yoga?
See I'm a dancer from back in the day. My sister, Haley, Andi, and I went to an under 21 club a lot when we were in high school and it didn't matter if it was country, hip-hop, club music, or the Macarena, we were out on the floor getting our groove on. I was probably the worst dancer out of the lot, but, dammit, my fat ass was out there shaking it (my sister, the other fat girl of the group, was probably the best dancer of the four of us...she got the rhythm and I got the common sense).
Anyway, about four or five years ago, I went to a party. There was a DJ and my ass was out on the floor, fattest girl out there, having at it. But, at the end of the night, I realized, I wasn't keeping up as good as I used to.
And, lo, a decision was made. I started walking (which I hated) and ended buying a yoga DVD. I tried it, liked it, and never looked back. I also quit walking and set off to find a new cardio that I actually liked (it took like three years before I found belly dancing).
Now, I'm keeping up on the dance floor better than I did. Not as good as high school, but damn, that was 10+ years ago. I can make an allotment for old age now.
I'm also a better dancer. I have no idea how that happened.
