Oh now that's tacky
Jun. 12th, 2008 10:46 pmDad had me order four movies for him the other day (he still has trouble with this new fangled internet dealie...I still check his email for him). He got a volume of Ma and Pa Kettle, Cheyenne Social Club, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Murder By Death.
Oh how I love Murder By Death. It's up there with Clue for me. It's a classic.
Our tape of it went missing long ago, it's barely played on TV, and the DVD can be hard to find. But Dad found it in one of his many catalogs (he has an addiction...he needs a 12 step program), I ordered it, and it came in the mail yesterday. We watched it tonight.
It's just as good as I remember it.
For those out of the loop, it's written by Neil Simon and features Peter Falk, David Niven, Peter Sellers, Elsa Lanchester, and James Coco doing parodies of Sam Spade, the Thin Man, Charlie Chan, Miss Marples, and Poirot. Throw in Truman Capote as the bad guy, Alec Guiness as a blind butler, Maggie Smith, Eileen Brennan, Nancy Walker, Estelle Winwood, James Cromwell, and Richard Narita and you've got comedy gold.
The dialogue is clever (and since I'm older, I'm getting a lot more of the jokes), the sight gags are hilarious, and the acting is brilliant. It's all around gold.
Please tell me that someone else knows the joy of this movie.
