whiski_sour: (what the shit is this?)
We had our first tornado warning for the county today. I found it to be rather confusing and then lackluster; Carrie called her mother, completely excited.

The day was warm and windy. The later it got, the cloudier it got to the point that rain was immenient. Carrie had laundry on the line and fretted about it. I was more concerned with getting dinner cooked because I wanted to use the grill before it rained.

I get the steaks off the grill and the mushrooms, the onions are finishing up, and my weatherbug alert goes off. I check it; severe thunderstorm warning. Coolies. My steaks are done. I'm good.

Carrie, meanwhile, is quizzing me. "Should we get ready just in case there's a tornado? I'll get my stuff together just in case." "Carrie, I will tell you when it's time to panic."

The alert goes off again. I check it again. Tornado warning.

Well, yes, it is cloudy and windy and that's pretty much all that's needed 'round these parts.

So I go to check the dopplar and Carrie's racing to her phone because she wants to call her mother and Dad's across the street chatting with the neighbors. The siren goes off.

I'm looking at the dopplar and I'm not picking up on this damn twister and why we're getting pegged for a warning. So I switch it over to my favorite station to watch Lee whip the masses up into a panicked frenzy. As soon as I hear the words "Issued from St. Louis", I roll my eyes, change the station, but put on my shoes anyway (a tornado will not hit my house if I'm wearing shoes...I'm convinced of this).

Dinner is ready and I'm fixing myself a plate (damn my impending destruction, I'm hungry now) while Carrie is chattering excitedly to her mother and Dad is still at the neighbors'. I go to my room and put on the Cubs game, but then check the dopplar again. I need to know how much time I have before it starts raining and I have to run through the house like a mad woman shutting windows. I'd like to be done eating by then.

That's when I hear the nice lady robot voice on the dopplar station saying that the tornado warning has been cancelled because the storm has already moved through the area. It hasn't even started raining yet!

We did end up getting a storm about ten or fifteen minutes later, though nothing too spectacular (unless you come from Buffalo where the lightening and thunder are different...then it's awesome).

This is why I've been known to be on the internet playing Word Whomp during tornadoes. I'd spend my summer in the basement if I listened to these people.
